A New-Generation Utility Cab Debuted

●Nathan Shiga: October 23

A unique ceremony was held in Koto Ward, Tokyo, today to “send off” a new type of utility cab capable of loading more larger-size luggage, designed for wheelchaired passengers to easily get on and off without much ado.

The cab, manufactured by Toyota, is a mini-van taller than regular cabs by 20 centimeters, the floor 5 centimeters lower. The assistant driver’s seat and all the rear seats can be conveniently folded up to create an ample space for large-size luggage for the convenience of tourists.

The ceremony was participated by President Akio Toyota, Chairman Kazuaki Kawanabe of the Japan Federation of Hire-Taxi Associations and etc.

Nissan has a utility cab already marketed and, now that Toyota adds its own version, the hire-cab industry proposes to increase the number of utility cabs colored in brilliant blue up to 30% in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Chairman Kawanabe comments:

“They have yellow cabs in the United States and black ones in London. So, why not Samurai blue in Japan?”

President Toyota brags:

“We’ve conceived this utility cab to be an Olympic legacy.”
