Elderly Volunteer of Age 78 Saves Boy of Age 2

Here’s an amazing story about a 78-year-old man who drove all the way from Kyushu to Yamaguchi to miraculously locate a two-year-old boy who had been lost for two days, his mother half giving up hope to find.

This elder, Haruo Obata by name, is an ex-fishmonger in Oita, Kyushu, who claimed to be a full-time volunteer hopping about helping people in need. He was up in Fukushima when the area was in stress after the earthquake and won himself an honorable title Maestro guiding young volunteers what and how to do in the disaster areas.

Obana-san is no ordinary man of action as he had climbed 55 peaks in Northern Alps by age 58. He ran his shop five years beyond the retirement age of 65. Asked of his “drawbacks”, he says he has three – his looks, his face being too dark and short legs.

The 2-year-old boy, Yoshiki Fujimoto, was visiting his mother’s parents’ home in Suo Oshima, Yamaguchi, and went out for a walk toward the beach with his grandfather at 10:30 a.m., August 12. He chanced to turn back home alone and somehow lost his way. The police circulated his photo in the neighborhood to lead an intensive search without reaction for two days.

Obana-san drove up to Suo Oshima and joined the search on August 14. At 6:00 a.m., the following morning he walked into the hill for 15 minutes or so, roughly 600 meters, from where Yoshiki-chan was lost, Obana-san spotted him by a brook. “You – Yoshiki-chan?”, he asked the boy, who responded“Yes, it’s me right here…” All that happened in 30 minutes after he had joined the search.

Obana-san handed him a piece of candy and Yoshiki-chan crunched it vigorously down the throat.

The boy was taken to the hospital for first-aid treatment and reportedly fast recovering. Obana-san received a framed letter of appreciation from the local police for his miraculous work done.
