Guru Asahara and Six Disciples Beheaded

Guru Asahara and Six Disciples Beheaded

I thought of writing about this sooner but let it go till my mind readies itself to make a meaningful analysis of one of Japan’s most merciless crimes ever committed in modern times.

‘It’ is the episode of a notorious guru named Shoko Asahara, born Chizuo Matsumoto, and founder of his yoga-rooted cult Aumu Shinrikyo. After a controversial trial which had stretched over two decades, Shoko Asahara and six of his disciples were executed ten days ago on July 6 on account of their deadly Tokyo subway sarin attack in 1995 and another attack a year before.

For economy of time and space, allow me to suggest you access Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoko_Asahara for every detail of the cult’s illicit deeds and call your attention to one central issue that, in my opinion, vividly characterizes this cult under Guru Asahara.

Now, to briefly portray Asahara in a few lines, he was born half blind due to infantile glaucoma and enrolled in a school for the blind. He graduated in 1977 and turned acupuncturist. His education terminated at high school level without a day of college life to his credit, meaning his quasi-religious remarks in later years had no academic basis whatsoever. My immediate suspicion points to just why and how his cult followed the path as it did drawing so many men and women of intelligence.

The point is that his disciples were members of the elite from Japan’s major colleges and universities, not to mention the notorious Tokyo University. The six disciples who were beheaded with Asahara on July 6 were all top potential scientists who would have followed respectable careers elsewhere. So, why did such highly educated young scientists opted to follow a downtown acupuncturist? Whatever in Asahara attracted them to the extent of dying for/with him? Some might argue cult is such by nature; others could declare all of them must have been out of mind. Could be – but so many of them in unison?

There is not a shred of doubt in that this individual Asahara had proven in the course of his trial to be a genuine imposter. Asahara’s so-called “teachings” proper never drove those youngsters to follow the path as they did; rather, his tactful figures of speech instilled some sense of mission in their system. In other words, such sense of mission found its way into a sort of mental, if not spiritual, vacuum commonly found among the expert ignoramus helplessly susceptible to external stimuli particularly of non-scientific nature. Asahara undoubtedly had to his credit a formidable power of speech – enough to allure an army of the expert ignoramus.

Asahara now gone, Japanese society has learned a costly lesson. What must we do to guard ourselves against his posterity? New laws and regulations against cult help little in weeding its buds. The best is a general consensus to cut down on the population of the expert ignoramus – to remove the walls dividing the experts and awaken them to metaphysics or the world beyond and above science.

Had those young scientists only spent a bit of their time to study what’s beyond and above science, they wouldn’t have died such miserable deaths in the wake of a worthless creature like Asahara.

Lastly, I can’t help wondering why it had taken two decades to behead this scoundrel? The universal ethics of human rights is seriously challenged here. Personally, I wish I were in a lawless world where his likes are dealt with the day they committed deadly crimes. What say you?
