EV Shift Picking Up?

●Nathan Shiga: September 6, 2017

Nissan announced a fully remodeled EV “Leaf” that runs 400 kilometers with each charge – a distance from Tokyo to Shiga, September 6.

The vehicle costs about the same as the previous model at 3.15 – 3.99 million yen (with tax) and covers twice the distance. With the government subsidy for electric cars, its lowest-cost model could sell below 3 million yen.

Nissan plans to start marketing the new model in Japan and subsequently to the US and Europe. The new model is fully automatic in steering and acceleration and has a new device to aid parking.

President Hiroto Nishikawa of Nissan comments:

“The new model covers a distance some 40% more than its previous model and is practically a trouble-free EV for daily use.”

France and the UK announced in July this year banning gasoline‐powered vehicle in the near future; China is likewise reported to have declared its intention to obligate automakers to produce electric vehicles. In July this year, the overall sale of electric vehicles increased over ten folds in five years up to 460 thousand.

China tops with 257 thousand followed by the US 86 thousand, Norway 29 thousand, France 21 thousand and Japan 15 thousand. Volkswagen (Germany) plans to input over 30 variations of EV in the coming decade; Volvo (Sweden) will produce nothing but EV after 2019.

It looks as though electric power is about to take the place of fossil fuel in not so distant a future.
