As of end 2017, the total number of foreign residents in Japan aggregates 2.56 million and illegal residents have increased in number for four years in a row.
The Immigration and Naturalization Office says 2,561,848 foreigners were registered as residing in Japan at end 2017. It’s an increase of 179,026 over the previous year or an increase in a ratio of 7.5% – the highest since the statistics were first taken in 1959.
China tops with 730,890 followed by South Korea with 450,663, Vietnam with 262,406 or up by 31.2%.
As of January1 this year, a total of 66,498 or an increase of 1,228 over the previous year, were found illegally residing beyond the period of stay – an increase for consecutive four years.
The Ministry of Justice points out not a few come to Japan for short stay and go on residing and working beyond the period of stay. While on one hand exposing illegal residents, the ministry plans on the other hand to expedite the process by simplifying departure procedures for those willing to report.
