Japan’s Star Skaters Swept Gold and Silver Medals in Figure Skating Final Competition at Pyeongchang

■Nathan Shiga: February 18, 2018

Yuzuru Hanyu and Shoma Uno made a clean sweep of two top medals at the men’s figure skating final games at Pyeongchang Saturday. Their rivals from Spain, US and China stood aghast watching them glide their way to the gold and silver medals.

It was a memorable win for Yuzuru Hanyu as his gold medal at Pyeongchang signifies his consecutive Olympic triumphs – the first feat in 66 years in the history of figure skating.

After the competition, Hanyu confided how hard pressed he had been prior to the competition due to a series of mishaps along the way to Pyeongchang, adding that he was that much more pleased of his performance this time.

Shoma Uno skated with remarkable precision and registered high marks in jumps, spins and artistic displays and would have threatened Hanyu in the challenge for gold had it not been for his slip in the initial loop a few minutes after the opening.

Uno admitted he was looking ‘the best-looking medal’ but gave up at the opening mishap and concentrated on ‘doing my best’ whichever the medal. His performance impressed not a few viewers as some commented in favor of Uno in the contest for the gold medal this time.

Japan was overjoyed Saturday night at the sight of the two top spots on the podium proudly claimed by her topmost male skaters. Figure skating is a popular winter sport in Japan and more young potential skaters are budding in the recents years.
