A 117-Year Woman in Kagoshima Lauded on the Day the Aged

●Nathan Shiga: September 18

On Respect for the Aged Day, September 18, Governor Satoshi Mitazono of Kagoshima paid a courtesy call on Mrs. Nabi Tajima resident in Kigaigashima – now the world’s most aged person after the passing of a Jamaican woman on September 15 who was 5 months older than Tajima-san.

Tajima-san received Governor MItazono at the special nursing home for the aged “Kitai En” where she stays most of her time.

“Congratulations, Tajima-san”, said Governor Mitazono, adding:

“I wish you will keep up your health for more years ahead.”

Local folks volunteered to sing and dance in her honor while her family and the staff applauded to highlight the occasion.

”Tajima-san never misses a meal”, the home staff says, “like the breakfast on the 18th morning she left not a piece of rice.”

Nabi Tajima spends most her time at the home on her back but responds to every call by the house staff and even moves her hands up and down to the tune of Shamisen,

Hiroyuki Tajima, her grandson, 64, says:

“I’ve never thought Grandma would live to be the most aged in the world. It’s like a dream. I sure hope she’ll go on living for more years to come.”
