Japan is overcrowded (?) with visiting foreign tourists on the eve of Ohanami or cherry blossoms fest. In the month of February, the LLCs offered extra flights for visitors from Southeast Asia and the total number registered an all-time record of 2.64 million – that’s an increase of 2.8% over February last year.
China topped with 723,600, up by 1%. In the Spring Festival fest early last month the Chinese tourists numbered 20% over the previous year but the percentage for February turned to be somewhat meager due to the decrease in the number of cruise ships calling this time of year.
Director Hiroshi Tabata comments:
“We are targeting 40 million by next year and need to study local trends to work out programs to attract foreign tourists.”
The cherry blossoms front traverses Japan northwards in the months of March and April – the exact timing of “mankai (full bloom)” depends on day-to-day climate. Some people like it early, others at mankai and a few dilettantes prefer the blossoms “just showering”.
Whichever you pick, Japan in March through April is a golden season for sightseeing in Japan with Sakura in sight.
