A town of historic structures and scenic charms, Kamakura is generally known for the Great Buddha that rises 11 meters. It is a must for school excursioners and foreign tourists.
The Great Buddha of Kamakura has enjoyed centuries of repute as a colossal Buddha image sitting in the open air but now comes a yet taller rival in Hinodemachi, Tokyo, to challenge its size and height.
The rival, the Great Buddha of Hinodemachi, is 12 meters tall – a meter taller than the predecessor in Kamakura – and 18 meters including the base he sits on. It was cast in parts in Yamagata and bought in for assembly in Hokoji Temple in Hinodemachi – an old temple of 500 years.
Chief Priest Yoshihide Yasa, 64, vowed to materialize his father’s wish to wish for the betterment of local community and to pray for public safety and embarked on the project in 2013.
The Great Buddha of Hinodemachi will present its colossal figure late this month.
