“Civilian” Marathoner Kawauchi Clocked 2:18:56 under 17℃ Below Zero!

■Nathan Shiga: January 3

A favorite of his hometown in Saitama as “Civilian Marathoner”, Yuki Kawauchi, dared run in freezing temperatures 17℃ below zero and made it under 2:20 for the 76th time – good enough to mark a world record for the most marathons run under 2:20. His performance in the Marshfield Road Runner’s 37th New Year’s Day Marathon was lauded by the US media as the fastest marathoner under arctic temperatures.

Kawauchi was clad in an orange fluorescent long sleeve, a ski mask covering his neck up but eyes, nose, and mouth, wearing the number 4100. The local media covered his story rather extensively with the heading: Yuki Logs WR 76th Sub-2:20:00 Marathon in Frosty Marshfield (MA!)

Kawauchi commented following the race:

“I have run a lot of marathons and so it’s tough to compare the weather, but this is the coldest weather I have ever run a marathon in.”

Three had enlisted in the race and only Yuki Kawauchi ran it through to break the previous record shared by American Doug Kurtis.
